This fascinating 30-minute documentary explores the history of how the Peters Equal Area World Map came into being. The project, a collaborative effort between Ruth Abrams and her map-publisher son, Bob Abramms, took six years for them to complete. It was filmed on-location at Dr. Peters home in Bremen, Germany, as well as in Oxford, England, and a variety of locations in the USA. The film includes scenes from the WEST WING TV show that featured the map and cartographic critiques that show the tension and conflict that the Peters map generated amongst the cartographic establishment. The film contains the only English-language interviews ever conducted with Arno Peters. Dr. Peters died in 2002, fifteen months after these interviews were filmed. The Peters World Map was a radical map, and as this film shows, Arno Peters was truly a remarkable man. His impact will be felt for generations to come.

Jason Taylor Proposal for Jaibalito

Something Lost depicts a lone figure looking down, reaching into a well. The piece is designed to be placed underwater, portraying feelings of loss associated with time and history. The viewer is left to wonder if the figure is looking for something or trying to reclaim something of the past.

Its placement in Lake Atilan is significant as its rich historical roots add a sense of mystery and wonder to its conceptual presence. Renown as the deepest Lake in Central America the underwater well is designed to create a perception that one can look into down into the centre of the planet.

Its incongruous and non-functional presence (a well underwater) intends to be humorous yet reflect on the some of the illogical processes of our lives.

Materials: Cast cement, bamboo or re-enforced fibre glass bar.

The Tuesday and Thursday sessions are appropriate for anyone at any level of experience. The format is guided experience, beginning with a kinetic warm up and proceeding through four or five exercises focused on habit development; building the drawing by moving from general to specific. We finish with a live model when a model is available.

As most of the exercises are guided experiences, lecture content is kept to a minimum. The medium can be anything you care to bring to work with. Many people prefer pastels, others paint. We provide a basic assortment of stuff to draw with. We have appropriate paper.

The intention of each exercise is to lead the participant to make visual choices. To draw by seeing. The drawings are composed. That is, the forms of the composition are given a position in space.

This is fast paced with quick results. It is fun.

Jaibalito quiere un museo bajo el agua

Todo es cuestión de que se concrete pronto la invitación que desde hace más de un año Nathalie Verwilghen, residente de la aldea Jaibalito en Santa Cruz la Laguna, hizo al escultor Jason de Caires Taylor, quien estudió en Camberwell College of Art y se inspira en el arte de Richard Long, Christo y Claus Oldenberg. Taylor nació en 1974, vive en Inglaterra y está dispuesto a viajar a Guatemala y pasar dos semanas en el lago de Atitlán sin cobrar por esculpir y colocar sus obras. A cambio pide pasaje, hospedaje y comida. La idea concreta es que el escultor ofrezca un taller gratuito 15 días para escultores o artistas guatemaltecos que quieran contribuir al proyecto. Seguramente, unos días antes se realizaría una jornada de limpieza en el lago de Atitlán, para conseguir la mayoría de materiales necesarios para las esculturas subacuáticas que destacan por los procesos ecológicos con los que están realizadas. Haría falta montar en el lugar un centro para soldar y la estructura para transportarlos bajo de agua, trabajo que ya ofrecieron los buzos de Pana Divers.Las estatuas de Taylor son realizadas con objetos inservibles que contaminan visualmente si se abandonan solo así, pero que trabajados y soldados en una forma artística dan un efecto diferente.Con el tiempo, además, se convierten en arrecifes o filones artificiales que atraen y estimulan la fauna y flora del lugar mostrando además una relación intensa entre el arte moderno y el ambiente. Taylor, además instructor de buceo profesional con más de 14 años de experiencia, descubrió que bajo del agua las consideraciones físicas y ópticas son distintas para las esculturas, pues se ven 25 por ciento más grandes en el agua. El espectador de las esculturas subacuáticas tiene gran gama de ángulos y perspectivas que en la tierra serían imposibles de lograr. Eso sin tomar en cuenta los colores que se alteran cuando el agua absorbe la luz a diferentes velocidades, y es común ver efectos caleidoscópicos producidos por el movimiento del agua, la turbulencia y las corrientes.Beneficios para el puebloVía e-mail, Taylor cuenta que con estas esculturas ha ganado publicidad enorme y se encuentra en contacto con muchos reporteros y agencias de noticias, que están muy interesadas en cubrir el trabajo que realizaría en La Estación de Tren de Jaibalito, proyecto que lidera Verwilghen, de origen belga.La obra del escultor incluye un parque de esculturas subacuáticas en la isla caribeña de Granada, el cual ha elevado los beneficios en los centros de buceo en casi 200 por ciento, al igual que el turismo convencional. Se estima que el país ha obtenido alrededor de US$2 millones en publicidad gratuita, pues ha aparecido en referencias y fotos en más de 80 diversos web sites, 20 foros y 100 blogs.Verwilghen considera que los beneficios para los 200 habitantes de Jaibalito pueden ser muchos, ya que un parque subacuático de estas caracaterísticas atraerá a miles de turistas nacionales y extranjeros y estimulará otro tipo de negocios. Nada mal para fomentar el turismo en una de las aldeas más pobres y más bellas del país.
